A unique opportunity has arisen to become totally involved in the maintenance, operation, and development of Brighton's famous Seafront Railway during the summer season. Responsibilities include assisting with the supervision and effective management of staff resources, assisting the Railway Engineer ensuring the safe the operation of the railway and trains, while promoting the service to the public. The successful candidate will be given an intensive training and induction course, after which they will be required to undertake four written examinations in accordance with ORR requirements for those carrying out safety critical work on the Volks Railway. Applicants should therefore be prepared to study, sit and pass these exams if appointed.
The successful candidate will be required to show that they have proven skills in woodworking, mechanical and particularly electrical engineering repairs and maintenance, including the use of hand tools and workshop machinery, as the trains are maintained and repairs carried out if required each day over the summer period. Experience in basic electrics, fault finding, is essential. • The position requires the candidate to be physically fit, as you will be required to assist the Volks Staff, in replacing the track, line & sleepers. Woodwork and metalwork structural repairs are also carried out to the fleet of five wooden trains which date back to 1928. This position is designated safety critical by the ORR (office of railway regulation); a medical test is therefore required. Full medical tests will take place from 9th - 13th March- it will not be possible to reschedule these tests. • Proven fitting skills, and a willingness to work a rota including weekends throughout the season from Easter to September in order to ensure a quality service is provided to the railway customers should be demonstrated. • Candidates should be computer literate in Microsoft Excel and Word. Taking exams will be a requirement of the position. 1x Fixed Term Contract until 27th September 2015. A Seasonal rota is operated over 4 weeks with an average 37 hour week including working 2 weekends in four. Weekdays are 8.30am to 5.30pm, weekends to 8.30 am 6.30pm. Some late nights to 9pm are expected.
